Deer Park Summer Course 2002

June 24 to July 26, 2002

For Summer Course 2002 (June 24th – July 26th) Ven. Geshe Sopa will continue teaching from Je Tsongkapa's dGongs pa rab gsel, a commentary on Chandrakiriti's Madyamakavatara.(Tibetan: dU ma la aJug pa). The primary subject of this text is the 6 Perfections. Geshe-la will complete the chapter on Patience, where he left off at the end of the 2001 Course, and continue into the chapter on Wisdom. In addition, Ven. Yangsi Rinpoche will continue teaching from Konchok Jigme Wangpo's text on the tenet systems of the 4 Buddhist schools.

Geshe Sopa-la will teach Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM -12:00 noon and from 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM from Monday, June 24th through Friday, July 26th. Although Geshe-la's commentary is offered primarily in English, a reading knowledge of Tibetan is recommended. The tenets class will be held from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. This class will be taught in Tibetan, with a translator. Copies of the Tibetan texts will be made available by Deer Park.

With limited housing available for ordained sangha only, Deer Park is unable to provide accommodations for students. Please see the list provided for housing options in the Madison area. We ask that you please contact the establishments yourself and make arrangements. Ordained monks should contact Ven. Geshe Jampa Khedup (gjkhedup@msn.com) or 608-835-5572) at Deer Park to see if there is availability there. Ordained nuns should contact Ven. Ani Lhundub Damcho (dianaf@compuserve.com or 608-835-6990). There is a daily fee for those staying at either of the Deer Park residences.

With the course being 5 weeks this year, the course fee is $275. There is no charge for ordained sangha. Since attendance is limited to 60 students, to secure your registration for the course, please send a deposit of at least $125.00 as soon as you are able. The balance will be due by final registration on June 23rd.

If there are at least 25 people interested in participating, vegetarian and non-vegetarian lunches will be provided weekdays during the course for $150 per person. Lunch is by pre-registration only.

When you send in your deposit for the course, please indicate if you want to have the lunch provided by Deer Park, and specify if you would like vegetarian or non vegetarian. The lunch fee of $150.00 can be sent with your deposit or can be paid separately by June 23rd. We hope that people will consider making an additional contribution to enable Deer Park to provide the ordained sangha with lunch free of charge. If you would like to help sponsor lunch for the sangha please indicate a pledged amount when you send in your course deposit.

Please complete the registration form and mail it with your deposit*. Indicate on the check what the money is for: i.e., course fee, lunch, lunch donation for sangha, or other purpose. Checks should be made payable to Deer Park and mailed to:

Deer Park Buddhist Center
Summer Course 2002
4548 Schneider Dr.
Oregon, WI 53575

* Sangha not sending any money can send the completed form via email.

On June 23rd there will be a final registration period following Deer Park's regularly scheduled Sunday teachings. Please come between 12:30 PM and 4:00 PM to confirm your participation, to sign up for the lunch program if you haven't already (the last opportunity before a final count is taken), to determine who needs a copy of the Tibetan text, to learn how you can help with maintenance of the teaching facilities and grounds during the course, and more. This will be very helpful for the course coordinators and for preventing the little bit of chaos that usually occurs the first days of a course. Thanks in advance for helping us with this.

We hope that you will be able to join us. Questions should be mailed to the address above or emailed to deerparkcourse@hotmail.com; or call Cathy or Frank at 608-233-6954. Updated information will also be available at Deer Park’s website: http://deerparkcenter.org.

Regards,
Cathy Kennedy and Frank Barone
