Deer Park Summer Course 2000

From July 10 to August 6 (or 13th if necessary), 2000, Ven. Geshe Lhundub Sopa will present a detailed exposition of the Madhyamika section of "Essence of Eloquent Teaching" Drang nge legs bshad snying po, rJe Tsong khapa's masterpiece of philosophical interpretation of Mahayana views of reality. (The text has been translated by R.A. Thurman, The Central Philosophy of Tibet: A Study and Translation of Jey Tsong Khapa's 'Essence of True Eloquence' [Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1991; paperback, $22.95]).

The lectures will be given at Deer Park Buddhist Center in the countryside near Oregon, Wisconsin, about ten miles south of the state capital, Madison, Wisconsin. They will begin on July 10 and will end approximately August 6, (or may continue until August 13) and will be given 10:00 to 12:00 and 2:00 to 4:00, Monday through Friday. Because the lectures will be based on a close reading of the original Tibetan text, they will presuppose that students have an intermediate knowledge of Classical Literary Tibetan. However, knowledge of Tibetan is not a requirement for attendance, and students who had little or no Tibetan at last summer's seminar felt they learned a good deal from their participation.
