Deer Park Summer Course 2001

July 9 to August 3, 2001
Ven. Geshe Lhundub Sopa will teach
Je Tsongkhapa's Illumination of the Thought, An Extensive Explanation of Chandrakirti's 'Supplement to the Middle Way', Chapters one to five.

For Summer Course 2001 (July 9 - Aug. 3): Ven. Geshe Sopa will be teaching
the first five chapters of Je Tsongkhapa's dGongs pa rab gsal, a commentary on
Chandrakiriti's Madhyamakavatara. The primary subject of this text is the Six
Perfections. (Geshe-la plans to do the 6th chapter on Wisdom in the summer of
2002). In addition, another of Deer Park's teachers will teach from Konchok
Jigme Wangpo's text on the tenet systems of the four Buddhist schools (drupta).

Geshe Sopa-la will teach Monday through Friday from 10:00-12:00 PM and
2:00-3:30 PM from July 9 to August 3. Although Geshe-la's commentary is
offered primarily in English, a reading knowledge of Tibetan is recommended.

The afternoon session on tenets will be held from 4-5 PM, Monday thru
Friday. This class will be taught in Tibetan, with a translator.

Geshe-la recommends listening to his discourses directly without relying on
separate English translations. Copies of the Tibetan texts will be made
available by Deer Park.

With limited housing available for ordained sangha only, Deer Park is unable
to provide accommodations for students. Please see the list below of housing
options in the Madison area. We ask that you please contact the
establishments yourselves and make arrangements. Ordained monks should
contact Ven. Geshe Jampa Khedup (gjkhedup@hotmail.com or 608-835-5572) at
Deer Park to see if there is availability there. Ordained nuns should
contact Ven. Ani Tenzin Namdrol (namdrol@cs.com or 608-835-6990).

The course fee is $250. There is no charge for ordained sangha. Since
attendance is limited to 60 students, to secure your registration for the
course please send a deposit of at least $125.00 as soon as you are able.
The balance is due by June 30th.

If there are at least 25 people interested in participating, vegetarian and
non-vegetarian lunches will be provided weekdays during the course for $140
per person. Lunch is by pre-registration only.

When you send in your deposit for the course, please indicate if you want to
have the lunches provided by Deer Park, and specify if you would like
vegetarian or non vegetarian. The lunch fee of $140.00 can be sent with your
deposit or can be paid separately by June 30th. We hope that people will
consider making an additional contribution to enable Deer Park to provide
the ordained sangha with lunches free of charge. If you would like to help
sponsor lunch for the sangha please indicate a pledged amount when you send
in your course deposit.

Please complete the registration form below (or similar handwritten version)
and mail it with your payment. Indicate on the checks whether they are for
the "Summer Course" and/or are for lunch for yourself or are a donation for
lunch for a sangha member and/or for another purpose. Checks should be made
payable to Deer Park and mailed to:

PLEASE NOTE: On July 8, there will be a final registration period (for
those who didn't make the June 30th fee deadline) and orientation for all
summer course attendees. The registration period will follow Deer Park's
regularly scheduled Sunday teachings. Please come between 12:30 PM and 4:00
PM to confirm your participation, to sign up for the lunch program if you
haven't already (the last opportunity before a final count is taken), to
determine who needs a copy of the Tibetan text, to learn how you can help
with maintenance of the teaching facilities and grounds during the course,
and more. This will be very helpful for the course coordinators and for
preventing the little bit of chaos that usually occurs the first days of a
course. Thanks in advance for helping us with this.

We hope that you will be able to join us. Questions should be mailed to the
address above or deerparkcourse@hotmail.com. .
